ASIA Sumas Student Earns Bronze at Skills Canada National Competition

June 4, 2026

Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (ASIA) Sumas student Kate Brown has earned national recognition for her skills in architectural design, winning a bronze medal in Architectural Technology and Design at the 2026 Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto.

Brown is enrolled in the Architectural Drafting program offered through the District's Career Programs. The program provides students with hands-on training and post-secondary learning opportunities while exploring careers in architecture, design and related fields in partnership with the University of the Fraser Valley.

Brown qualified for the national competition after capturing a gold medal at the Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition earlier this year. Representing British Columbia, she competed against some of the country's top secondary students in Architectural Technology and Design.

The achievement reflects Brown's dedication to developing her skills through hands-on learning experiences and career-focused opportunities. Throughout her journey, she received support from UFV architecture instructor Wes McAulley (pictured below), who helped prepare her for competition at the national level.

Brown's accomplishment was also celebrated by her mother, Ms. Soga, an Education Assistant at Sandy Hill Elementary School, who travelled to Toronto to support her daughter as she competed on the national stage (pictured above).

Skills Canada competitions provide students with opportunities to apply classroom learning in real-world settings while exploring future career pathways. Brown's success highlights the impact of experiential learning and the strong partnerships between K-12 and post-secondary education that help students prepare for their futures.

The Abbotsford School District congratulates Kate on this outstanding achievement and for representing her school, community and province with excellence.
