Celebrating Long Term Service: Jan Koch’s Passion for Teaching
For over 35 years, Jan Koch has dedicated her career to shaping young minds in the Abbotsford School District. Currently, she works as the Learning Assistant Teacher at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. In this interview, she reflects on her experiences, the importance of mentorship, and the impact she hopes to leave behind.
What is it that you love most about working in the Abbotsford School District?
I love the children. They keep me grounded, and I learn something from them every day. Their energy, curiosity, and progress make my job incredibly rewarding. Seeing them grow and succeed is truly inspiring. The team I work with is also a highlight—they are professional, dedicated, and always put students first. The spirit of collaboration and passion for education in Abbotsford is truly special.
How has the district supported your professional growth?
The Abbotsford School District provides numerous opportunities for professional development. They offer workshops, support for special projects, and even funding for teachers to purchase books to stay updated on new methodologies. They also encourage us to attend professional development programs outside the district, which helps broaden our perspectives. The district truly values lifelong learning and ensures its educators have the tools they need to succeed. I’ve also had the chance to mentor teachers over the years, and I firmly believe that bringing back retired teachers to mentor new educators would be an excellent initiative. Teaching is about building relationships and understanding students, and having experienced mentors can make a world of difference.
What legacy do you hope to leave in the district?
One of the things I’m most proud of is the drop-in centre we created at our school. It’s a space where students can seek help and support at any time, without hesitation. At one point, we had over 2,000 student visits in a year. That’s the kind of system I’d love to see in every school—a place where kids feel comfortable reaching out and receiving guidance. The Abbotsford School District is committed to student well-being, and I hope to see more spaces like this in the future. I also want to see teachers continue to foster kindness and understanding in their classrooms. The Abbotsford School District is an amazing place to work, with passionate educators and a commitment to student success. If we continue to put students first and embrace new ways to support them, we can truly make a difference in their lives.
