63rd Annual Snowball Basketball Tournament: A Legacy of Excellence and Community Spirit
The Snowball Basketball Tournament at Abbotsford Senior Secondary (Abby Senior), one of the longest-running high school basketball tournaments in the province, marked its 63rd year with thrilling games, a legacy of excellence, and strong community support. Known for its high-quality competition, the tournament continues to attract top-tier teams from across Canada and the United States, cementing its reputation as a premier event in high school basketball.
A History of Growth and Prestige
The Snowball Tournament took a significant leap in 2007 when the late Prentice Lenz and Rick Funk, then the Athletic Director for the Abbotsford School District, opened the doors to international teams. After hundreds of phone calls and a key conversation with some who worked at ESPN, they secured their first U.S. team from Williamson, Alabama. This move not only elevated the tournament's profile but also set a precedent for hosting elite American teams year after year.
“We’ve had Division I players, professional athletes, and even NFL stars come through here,” shared Funk. Notable Abbotsford School District alumni include Marek Klassen, who played pro in Europe and with the Fraser Valley Bandits, and Chase Claypool, an Abbotsford native who transitioned from basketball to football, now playing in the NFL.
A Community-Driven Effort
The success of the Snowball Tournament is a testament to the unwavering support of the local community. Each year, local businesses and sponsors step up to cover the high costs—this year totalling nearly $18,000—to bring teams to Abbotsford. These expenses include travel, food, and accommodations, ensuring that visiting teams have a memorable experience both on and off the court.
“It’s a unique opportunity for U.S. teams to experience Canada, often for the first and only time in their lives,” said Bo Sidhu, coach for the Abby Senior Panthers and Vice Principal at WJ Mouat Secondary. “And for our local players, it’s a chance to test themselves against top-level competition.”
A Platform for Excellence
The tournament has become a destination event for top local and international teams. The level of basketball has risen to the point where Canadian teams are now competing closely with—and even beating—their American counterparts. This year’s event culminated in Kelowna’s first Snowball championship, a testament to the growing strength of Canadian high school basketball.
Next year’s tournament is already generating excitement, with Rolling Hills from California, one of the top-ranking U.S. schools, set to participate.
For Bo, an Abbotsford Senior Secondary graduate and now part of the organizing committee, the Snowball Tournament is a full-circle moment. “I used to watch it as a fan, and now to coach the Panthers and help organize it has been incredibly rewarding,” he said.
A Legacy of Pride and Opportunity
Over its six-decade history, the Snowball Tournament has not only showcased incredible talent but also opened doors for players like Yale Secondary grad Nylan Roberts, who earned a basketball scholarship to UBC, and others who have gone on to Division I and professional careers.
“It’s a source of pride for the community and a legacy we hope to carry on for years to come,” said Bo.
The Snowball Tournament remains a shining example of how passion for sport, community support, and a commitment to excellence can come together to create something truly special. The District looks forward to next year’s tournament.
